Jack Burns

Judaism was our religion but we were Hungarians
Proud of our Hungarian heritage
It was beautiful
I had to leave it behind

Persecution of Jews became more obvious
If they gave the Germans a few Jews
They could save the rest

They marched us from our homes
We had no idea where we were
Where are they taking us? Where are we?
It was a very strange name, Auschwitz

It wasn’t normal anymore
The inhumanity of man against man
Can you imagine?
Mass shootings into mass graves
I just don’t want to live
Tragedy among tragedies

What’s going on?
Americans! Americans!
Liberation was like a present from the world
It was totally unreal
I became a free human being again
Today is the most special day of my life
